What 'Organic' Really Means in Period Care (And What to Watch For)
You’re standing in the period care aisle, and every box says something different.
"Organic cotton." "Natural feel." "Free from nasties." But what does it actually mean and who’s checking?
When you’re shopping for something that goes in or near your body, words like "organic" should offer peace of mind. But not all claims are created equal. Here’s what you need to know.
Not all "organic" claims are regulated
In Australia, brands can technically use the word "organic" on packaging even if only a small part of the product meets that description. There’s no single regulatory body enforcing organic claims across period care - which means it’s up to us to read the fine print.
Some pads and tampons might use organic cotton in the core but wrap it in synthetic layers. Others might only refer to the packaging or a small component. That’s why third-party certifications matter.
Certifications to look for (and why they matter)
If a brand is truly using organic cotton, they’ll usually have one or more independent certifications on the box. A few to look for:
-
ACO Certified Organic (Australian Certified Organic) - this is Australia’s leading organic certification. It means the cotton meets strict standards for organic farming and processing.
-
GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) - one of the most trusted international certifications. It ensures that at least 95% of the fibres are organically grown and that processing meets strict environmental and social criteria.
If those logos aren’t there, it doesn’t always mean the product is unsafe - but it’s worth asking more questions.
That’s why we reach for products like our Organic Cotton Pads and Organic Cotton Tampons - both ACO certified, unbleached, and wrapped in compostable film. They’re simple, breathable, and as honest as they sound.
What about “natural” or “chemical-free”?
These terms might feel reassuring, but they’re not regulated. "Natural" could mean anything from cotton to bamboo - or just fewer additives.
Instead of getting caught in the label language, focus on transparency. Is the brand clear about what’s inside? Do they explain how the cotton is sourced or how the product is made? If not, you’re allowed to be a little sceptical.
Small switches, better peace of mind
Choosing certified organic period care isn’t about chasing perfection - it’s about reducing your exposure to unknowns and choosing materials that feel better against your skin. For many of us, that’s reason enough.
If you’re not sure where to start, try one change at a time. Read the labels. Look for those certifications. And go with what your body feels good in.
What you use during your period should feel honest, simple, and safe. And sometimes, knowing what not to trust is just as powerful as knowing what to reach for.
At Femmé Organic, both our pads and tampons are ACO certified - made with ingredients we trust and use ourselves. If you’re ready to switch to something simpler, start with the products we’ve carefully chosen to feel better on your skin.
