Biodegradable Pads: Are They Worth It?

More Australians are reaching for biodegradable period care, but there’s still confusion about how they actually work, whether they’re safe and effective, and if the switch is really worth it.

Your skin gets picky during your period.

Anything scratchy, synthetic, or overly scented? Hard no. And then there’s the waste. Wrappers, plastic backing, more plastic in the bin. So when you hear about biodegradable pads, it sounds like a relief. But are they any good?

What does "biodegradable" actually mean?

In the world of pads, “biodegradable” usually means the materials break down more naturally over time - often made from cotton, cornstarch, or other plant-based fibres. But here’s the catch: not every pad labelled “biodegradable” will vanish in a backyard compost. Some need specific conditions (like commercial composting), and others still have sneaky plastic layers.

It helps to know the numbers: conventional pads can take up to 500 years to break down.

Femmé’s Organic Cotton Pads? They break down in 6 to 12 months under the right composting conditions. That’s a whole lot less plastic sitting in landfill.

Do they actually work?

The short answer: yes, when they’re well made. A good biodegradable pad will still give you the absorbency, fit, and leak protection you need - without locking you into plastic. If you’ve ever felt clammy or itchy in a conventional pad, switching to breathable, natural fibres can make a big difference.

Heavy flow? Just look for high-absorbency versions (yes, they exist).

Soft switch: what to expect when you try them

The first time you open one, it might feel different. The texture might be more fabric-like than glossy. You might notice less rustling (a quiet win). The pad itself will feel softer on your skin, less like a synthetic layer, more like cotton undies.

And if you're using something like Femmé's Organic Cotton Pads, you'll feel that difference right away: no plastic, no perfumes, just soft, breathable comfort.

A few things to keep in mind

  • Dispose of them thoughtfully: even biodegradable pads do best in compost or landfill conditions that allow airflow. Don’t flush them.

  • They won’t break down instantly: biodegradable doesn’t mean magic. But it does mean far less plastic lingering for years.

  • Your skin might thank you. Many people notice less irritation or itching once they switch.
